Magic Space

In the opening of Brisseau's À l’aventure, the absence of a conventional establishing shot allows for great play with space as we move from a medium close-up where it appears out character is in her own space, to a two-shot where we see her sitting quite close to her companion, and eventually the emergence of an interloper in the conversation, first revealed in a pan, and whose proximity to them on the bench (which would be impossible from the second shot illustrated below) is reiterated as he gets up to leave at the end of their conversation.
