Sergio Leone’s debute feature,
Il Colosso di Rodi (1961): a captured rebel leader is tortured by having a bell placed over his restrained, upright body, and beated repeatedly.
When removed, thin rivulets of blood run down his neck from his ears (particularly visible on his right ear).
A visual echo, later in the film, when the hero (Rory Calhoun as Darios) exits the Colossus’ ear and is pursued by red-cloaked soldiers, steaming out of the statue’s right ear.
