I remember seeing an illustration of Marey's photographic gun in a book I had on photography as a kid and being obsessed by it. As an adult, of course, it becomes the perfect invention-that-is-also-a-metaphor -- it's a camera that really "shoots."

The first 16mm camera I ever handled -- and the only one I've ever owned -- was a Krasnagorsk 3, which comes with a gun-like folding stock for handheld shooting, and it always made me think of the Marey device.
